Housing Justice in Los Angeles
With the passage of the disastrous 41.18 ordinance, the expiration of the California eviction moratorium looming, and a worsening housing crisis on the horizon, now is the time to take action to educate and mobilize our community around people-first policy solutions to this issue. We need a public health approach to solving homelessness, not more criminalization and displacement.
However, the city of Los Angeles continues to take an approach that meets the needs of big real estate developers, but fails to deliver housing as a human right. Meanwhile, federal austerity measures have blocked the construction of new public housing for decades. It's past time we prioritized the needs of working families and our unhoused neighbors, not corporations and real estate developers.
We had the honor of bringing together leading activists and community leaders to discuss the housing crisis in LA, the looming eviction crisis, and what real solutions for the unhoused could look like.
